What Is Base
Bridge to Base routes send assets to Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 incubated by Coinbase and built for high-throughput, low-cost transactions. The Base documentation identifies the network as an Ethereum L2 incubated by Coinbase, while the Base profile on L2Beat classifies it as an optimistic rollup built with the OP Stack. The same core technology also powers OP Mainnet, so Base uses Ethereum-compatible accounts, contracts, and wallet tooling.
Base ranks among the largest and most active Ethereum L2 networks by value secured and daily operations. It has no separate network token: ETH pays transaction fees. That means ETH bridged to Base serves two purposes immediately—an asset you can use in apps and the gas required to approve, swap, lend, or transfer tokens.
How to Bridge to Base with Rhino
To bridge to Base with Rhino, connect a wallet, choose the chain holding your assets, set Base as the destination, select a token, and confirm the quoted route. A browser wallet such as MetaMask signs each required approval and transfer. Rhino Bridge remains non-custodial throughout the flow because the connected wallet authorizes the transaction directly.
- Connect and select the source. Open Rhino Bridge, connect the wallet that holds the funds, then choose Ethereum, Arbitrum, or Optimism as the source network.
- Build the Base route. Set Base as the destination, choose ETH, USDC, USDT, or another available asset, and enter the transfer amount. The live route panel shows the fee and expected amount on Base.
- Confirm and track. Review the source chain, destination, token, fee, and received amount; approve the transaction in the wallet; then switch the wallet to Base when the transfer completes.
The Ethereum.org bridge guide explains why bridges are required: separate chains do not natively communicate, so a bridge coordinates the cross-chain asset transfer. Rhino handles route selection inside one interface, while the wallet remains the signing authority.
Supported Tokens on the Base Route
ETH and USDC are the primary assets for a bridge to Base, with USDT and DAI available on select routes. ETH arrives as Base’s native gas asset, so it can pay network fees without wrapping or swapping first. USDC arrives as a dollar-denominated stablecoin for transfers, swaps, liquidity, and lending.
- ETH: native gas token and a standard asset across Base applications.
- USDC: native USDC issued by Circle; Circle’s USDC network information includes Base among supported blockchains.
- USDT and DAI: available when Rhino displays an active source-to-Base route for the selected chain and amount.
Token availability changes by source chain and liquidity route, so the asset selector is the final route-level list. The Base ecosystem dashboard on DeFiLlama provides a current view of stablecoins, protocols, and bridged liquidity on the network.
Fees and Speed
A Rhino transfer from Arbitrum or Optimism to Base completes in under two minutes on standard routes and usually costs less than one dollar in total. A transfer from Ethereum typically takes two to five minutes, and Ethereum gas forms the largest part of the cost. Base gas stays under $0.01 for most routine transactions after the assets arrive.
- Arbitrum or Optimism → Base: under two minutes; sub-dollar total route cost.
- Ethereum → Base: two to five minutes; Ethereum network gas dominates the fee.
- Transactions on Base: generally sub-cent for routine transfers and app interactions.
The L2Beat Base metrics publish network activity, operating costs, and cross-chain flow data. After submitting the bridge, use BaseScan to confirm the destination transaction, token amount, wallet address, status, and gas paid. Check Rhino’s live quote before signing because it reflects the source-chain gas and route fee for that transaction.
Base Ecosystem After Bridging
Assets on Base can move directly into exchanges, lending markets, and social applications without returning to Ethereum. The DeFiLlama Base protocol rankings track active applications and liquidity. Major exchange options include Aerodrome and Uniswap, while BaseSwap provides another Base-native trading interface. Lending markets include Aave and Compound.
For social activity, Base has hosted friend.tech and supports a growing Farcaster application ecosystem. These apps use the same Base wallet address, so the bridged ETH pays gas and supported tokens can be used without a second cross-chain transfer.
Add Base to the wallet before opening an application. The Base network entry on ChainList supplies chain ID 8453, ETH as the currency, RPC endpoints, and Base explorer links. After the network is added, switch the wallet to Base, confirm the displayed address matches the bridge recipient, keep ETH for gas, and connect only after the destination balance appears.
